Lakehead University is a public university located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, with a second campus in Orillia, Ontario. It was established in 1965 and has grown to become one of Canada’s leading comprehensive universities, known for its strong academic programs and research initiatives.

Admission Requirements at Lakehead University

Undergraduate Programs: 

  1. Academic Requirements: International students must meet the minimum academic requirements for admission. This typically includes the completion of a secondary school diploma or its equivalent with an equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average (Canadian). The specific grade requirements may vary depending on the program of study. Students must also complete Program-Specific Prerequisite courses at the senior level (e.g. Grade 12).
    • Lakehead University may require undergraduate applicants to submit official transcripts via an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) from World Education Services (WES) Canada for verification as part of the admission process.
    • If you are studying in a private high school, a school profile will be required.
    • Note: Should your academic background not reflect your true potential for success, the Academic Support Access Program acts as an entryway for students whose academic average falls slightly below the required admission average. Applicants are automatically considered for admission to the Academic Support Access Program, subject to program eligibility.
  2. English Language Proficiency: International students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting valid test scores. Lakehead University accepts various English language proficiency tests such as IELTS academic (6.5), TOEFL iBT (80), and Duolingo (110). The minimum score requirements may vary by program.
    • For Nursing, Juris Doctor, and the Two-Year Bachelor of Education Programs the minimum English score requirements: IELTS academic (7.0), TOEFL iBT (103), and Duolingo (120)

    • If applicants meet the admission requirements set by Lakehead University but fall short of the English language proficiency requirements, they will be automatically considered for admission through Lakehead University’s Academic English Program.

  3. Supporting Documents: International students may be required to provide additional supporting documents, such as personal statements, portfolios, auditions, work experience, GMAT or GRE scores, letters of recommendation, or a resume/CV. These documents can help provide a comprehensive overview of the applicant’s qualifications and experiences.

Graduate Programs: 

  1. Academic Requirements: To be considered for admission, applicants should hold a degree from an accredited university, college, or institute and demonstrate a record of academic excellence. Unless otherwise specified in the program’s admission requirements, prospective degree students are expected to possess a four-year bachelor’s degree if applying to a master’s program with a minimum of second-class standing (B) based on their performance in their last 20 half courses or an equivalent measure. Applicants are expected to possess a master’s degree with an academic average as specified by the academic unit if applying to a PhD program.
    • International students must submit their official undergraduate transcripts or equivalent educational documents. These documents should be in their original language and include certified English translations.
    • Lakehead University may require graduate applicants to submit official transcripts via an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) from World Education Services (WES) Canada for verification as part of the admission process.

Tuition, Fees, and Refund Policy

Tuition: 

  1. Undergraduate Program Tuition: Approximately $28,000.00 CAD per year (See some exceptions below)
    • Eg. Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) tuition: Approximately $32,000.00 CAD per year
    • Eg. Engineering Degree Tuition: Approximately $36,000.00 CAD per year
  2. Graduate Program Tuition:
    • Tuition costs for Master’s Degree Programs: Approximately $7,945.36 CAD per term which sums up to $23,835 CAD per year (See some exceptions below)
      • Eg. Master of Business Administration tuition: $14,278.70 CAD per term
      • Eg. Master of Science in Engineering tuition: $10,945.37 CAD per term
      • Eg. Master of Computer Science tuition: $8,518.70 CAD per term
    • Tuition costs for Ph.D./Doctorate Degree Programs: $6,612.03 CAD per term (for a minimum of 9 terms)
  3. Payment Installments: Tuitions can be paid in two installments.
  4. Tuition Deposit: The Tuition Deposit for undergraduate programs is $500.00 CAD and for graduate programs is $1,000.00 CAD, which are due no later than 30 days prior to the program start date. Final payment of the first installment tuition is due by the first day of your program.

Fees: 

  1. International Undergraduate Application Fee: $135.00 CAD
  2. International Graduate Application Fee: $100 CAD
  3. Document Evaluation Fee (Charged to Prospective Students): $65.00 CAD
  4. Late Payment Fee (per missed payment deadline): $105.00 CAD
  5. Refund Administrative Fee: $30.00 CAD
  6. Co-op Education Application Fee: $30.00
  7. Co-op Fee: Ranges between $764 CAD – $814 CAD for the first term and half of that amount for the second term
  8. Residential and Meal Plan Fees:  
    • $13,602.00 CAD for a single room with a shared washroom & 5-day meal plan
    • $14,169.00 CAD for a single room with shared washroom & 7 day meal plan
      • There is a $600.00 CAD down payment

Refund Policy: 

All confirmation deposits and residence deposits are non-refundable, however, if you are an international student whose study permit/student visa has been denied prior to the start of the term, you may request a refund and provide your proof of visa denial.

    • Agnew Hall: Agnew Hall provides suite-style accommodations with private bedrooms and shared living areas. Each suite typically accommodates four to six students and includes a kitchenette and bathroom.
    • Chapples Residence: Chapples Residence offers apartment-style living with private bedrooms and shared living spaces. Each unit typically accommodates four students and includes a kitchen, bathroom, and common area.

    • Townhouses: The Orillia campus also offers townhouse-style residences that feature private bedrooms and shared living areas. Each townhouse typically accommodates six students and includes a kitchen, bathrooms, and common space.

    • Faculty Research Awards for Graduate Students: Full-time graduate students may be eligible to receive a Faculty Research Award, which provides a stipend for research or academic activities that are pertinent to their field(s) of study within the academic program. The award is granted by the student’s supervisor.
